CELLO & PIANO RECITAL
with Brice Catherin & Annini Tsiouti

Sunday 1 March 2015, 20:00

Galina Ustvolskaya (1919 – 2006), Grand Duet

John Cage (1912 – 1992), Two4

On one side, a woman. Born in 1919 in communist Russia, she lived secluded in a tiny flat in St-Petersburg, and wrote very few pieces, only when “God was asking her to”: Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskaya.

On the other side, a man. Born in 1912 in capitalist USA, he was idolized by his fellow musicians and fans. He travelled the world like a superstar and is composer of countless works: John Cage.

Yet, both have always been independent minds. Both always stood away from the musical establishment. The two pieces we chose to play are connected by a spirit of minimalism. As violent and radical as Ustvolskaya’s Grand Duet can be, its five movements consist of very few musical patterns, nailing anger and pain in the flesh of the listeners. On the very opposite, the extreme softness of Cage’s Two4 offers a unique moment of pure beauty and ecstasy, composed only with slow chords on the piano and long, quiet notes on the cello.

Brice Catherin is a French cellist and composer living between France and Cyprus. Since he finished his studies in 2006 in Switzerland, he has played and has been played in Switzerland, France, Belgium, Japan, Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Russia, Norway and Iceland. His recordings, both as a cellist and as a composer, are available mainly on the American netlabel Pan Y Rosas and on the French label Drone Sweet Drone. www.bricecatherin.org

Annini Tsiouti spends most of her time playing the piano. When she is not playing she is probably teaching or listening to music, talking or reading about music. Above all she prefers 20th century repertoire, but is not insensitive to other styles. This is the second time she will be performing a piece by John Cage in concert, after her interpretation of his piece 4'33 received triumphant reviews in international musical press.

The concert begins at 8:00 p.m.

Concert fee: 7 euro

Visual and Oral Stories

Friday 15 May 2015, 20:30

Christina Papakyriacou and Dimitris Spyrou meet and share visual and music stories with the common element of using objects as picture and sound derivatives.Using an "overhead projector" the artist Ch. Papakyriacou animates images, landscapes and colors that dress the music of D . Spirou who tells stories and poems through sounds , voices and objects that transform to songs. The whole action is done live through an improvisational character where sound and image interact by asking questions without answers and giving answers that have no questions.
