Galina Ustvolskaya (1919 – 2006), Grand Duet

John Cage (1912 – 1992), Two4

On one side, a woman. Born in 1919 in communist Russia, she lived secluded in a tiny flat in St-Petersburg, and wrote very few pieces, only when “God was asking her to”: Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskaya.

On the other side, a man. Born in 1912 in capitalist USA, he was idolized by his fellow musicians and fans. He travelled the world like a superstar and is composer of countless works: John Cage.

Yet, both have always been independent minds. Both always stood away from the musical establishment. The two pieces we chose to play are connected by a spirit of minimalism. As violent and radical as Ustvolskaya’s Grand Duet can be, its five movements consist of very few musical patterns, nailing anger and pain in the flesh of the listeners. On the very opposite, the extreme softness of Cage’s Two4 offers a unique moment of pure beauty and ecstasy, composed only with slow chords on the piano and long, quiet notes on the cello.

Brice Catherin is a French cellist and composer living between France and Cyprus. Since he finished his studies in 2006 in Switzerland, he has played and has been played in Switzerland, France, Belgium, Japan, Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Russia, Norway and Iceland. His recordings, both as a cellist and as a composer, are available mainly on the American netlabel Pan Y Rosas and on the French label Drone Sweet Drone.

Annini Tsiouti spends most of her time playing the piano. When she is not playing she is probably teaching or listening to music, talking or reading about music. Above all she prefers 20th century repertoire, but is not insensitive to other styles. This is the second time she will be performing a piece by John Cage in concert, after her interpretation of his piece 4'33 received triumphant reviews in international musical press.

The concert begins at 8:00 p.m.

Concert fee: 7 euro

To capture the essence of Itamar's music is to be taken on a journey where different cultures meet in harmony. Imagine the music of Keith Jarrett, Anouar Brahem and Oregon all blend together as a new and authentic voice...

Itamar's music holds a depth and sensitivity that touches listeners deeply; it blends the delicateness of Middle Eastern music, the freedom found in Jazz and the passion of Flamenco, creating a unique sound, all of his own.

Recipient of the '2014 ACUM Prize for Special Achievement in Jazz', The lucrative 2014 Landau Prize, as well as the 'Israeli Prime Minister prize for Composers'- Itamar Erez is an internationally renowned composer and guitarist who has shared the stage throughout his career with such musicians as Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Tomatito, Avishai Cohen, Jean-Louis Matinier, Zohar Fresco, and others.

In 2007 Itamar has joined the group of Sufi maestro Omar Faruk Tekbilek and is touring with him internationally. Itamar has released two CDs with his quartet 'The Adama Ensemble': "Desert Song" (2006) &"Hommage" (2010).

Itamar's recent CD is a special duet collaboration called "New Dawn" (2013) with Yshai Afterman (percussion) and with Antonio Serrano (harmonica) as special guest.

Over the years Itamar has received awards & grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Israeli Culture Ministry, America- Israel foundation, Amsterdam International Jewish Music Festival and others.

In 2014/15 Itamar will be touring in Canada, USA, Germany, Holland, Austria and India, and is at the moment working on new material for his next CD due in 2015.

Itamar plays a unique guitar with quarter notes to imitate the sound of the Oud.

A compelling voice on the world music scene, Israeli percussionist Yshai Afterman draws on Indian, Turkish, Persian and Arabic traditions, blending them with modern innovations into a highly technical, melodic and rhythmic style.

Constantly on tour internationally, Yshai performs with various projects and gives percussion master classes at academies, festivals and private settings. He has recently performed and taught in Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Belgium, Morocco, France, Portugal, Russia, Australia, Poland, Singapore, the U.K., Canada and the U.S., as well as across Israel.

In March 2013, he played an intimate show with famed singer-songwriter Idan Raichel at the Israeli Prime Minister’s house in Jerusalem for U.S. President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. In June 2013, they performed for Israeli President Shimon Peres at The Peres Peace Center in Jaffa.

Drawn to rhythm since childhood, Yshai began the serious study of percussion at age 23 while a student of dramatic performance at the prestigious Nissan Nativ Acting Studio in Tel Aviv, where he studied under masters including Nissan Nativ, Michael Gurevich and Mischa Luria. After graduation with honors in 2008, he devoted himself to mastering Middle Eastern hand drums under the guidance of renowned percussionist Zohar Fresco, with whom he studied intensively for four years. He also studied classical Eastern music at Hed College of Contemporary Music under Persian tar player Piris Eliyahu, a noted musicologist and composer.
He is currently studying advanced approaches to time and rhythm under master drummer Mark Moshayev.

Yshai is endorsed by Cooperman Frame Drums (USA), Hands On Drums Percussion (Germany) and Kandu Cajons (Israel).

Visual and Oral Stories

Friday 15 May 2015, 20:30

Christina Papakyriacou and Dimitris Spyrou meet and share visual and music stories with the common element of using objects as picture and sound derivatives.Using an "overhead projector" the artist Ch. Papakyriacou animates images, landscapes and colors that dress the music of D . Spirou who tells stories and poems through sounds , voices and objects that transform to songs.
