Charis Ioannou ~ saxophone
Stelios Papazoglou ~ guitar

Trio Smiles has been a part of the Cyprus live music scene for the last few years. Due to living in different countries the opportunities to make music together is mostly once in the year so the meeting and music making becomes even more special and to challenge it even more the goal is every year to have a new musical thema and various guests. In the last few years projects consisted of the Trio with Gabriela Kozyra and Eleonora Rousou playing the music of Joyce, the Trio with George Krasides playing Original Compositions, the Trio with Magda Mendes tributing Milton Nascimento etc.
This year we decide to dedicate our focus on Wes Montgomery. There are many sides to the great artist phenomenon Wes Montgomery. He was not only one of the jazz guitar greats, celebrating the tradition of the instrument but also taking it further to open new ways for the future, he was apart from that a great improviser always searching and finding the best available notes and melodies satisfying any audience and musicians and not necessary guitarists. Wes wrote many great compositions with some of them becoming standards in the jazz world and since the 60's being performed massively. Wes Montgomery in the few years of his recorded career (1957-1968) managed to play in various group formats and styles and with a diverse pallet of artists. From smokey organ blues to swing classics, latin grooves, orchestra and pop covers Wes managed to put always his stamp and never dichotomized music into styles and categories-just played the best he could unconditionally. Last but not least being the master of a not common thumb technic, managed to show the world that anything can be done!!!
Trio smiles consists of Rodos Panagiotou/Drums, Andreas Rodosthenous/Bass, Stelios Papazoglou/Guitar and this year having as special guest with them Charis Ioannou/alto Saxophone

οrganise SAXOPHONE SEMINARS with the title:
IMPROVISATION: ITS NATURE AND PRACTICE
with the eminent saxophonist
THOMAS LUMLEY
Sat. 13 April 2013
15:00 – 19:00 (with interval)
The seminars will focus on*:
• Fundamentals of non-genre specific improvising, both freely and over harmony
• Jazz improvisation techniques
• Harmonic, melodic and rhythmic ideas on improvisation.
*Suitable for all levels, regardless of experience in improvisation.
Description:
"Improvisation looking at its nature and practice" In this workshop we will look at the fundamentals of what improvisation is. Where it comes from and where you can go with it. We will cover both technical and artistic topics from the point of view of a saxophonist. Technical exercises for improvisation will be covered along with looking at the artistic intentions behind the techniques, answering both what you can do on the saxophone? where you can do it musically? and why you want to? We'll look at different ways and scenarios in which to apply this thinking and look at the end goal which is essentially the making of good music!
Thomas Lumley
After Graduating with a first class BA honours degree from the prestigious jazz course at Leeds College of Music in 2008 Tom’s skills lay in his uncanny improvisational ability and unique creative approach to the saxophone and the jazz idiom. With interests and influences from the jazz world along with keen interests in Contemporary Improvised music, Balkan folk music, Hindustani Classical music, Afro Cuban music and DIY Avant Garde Electronica Tom has a very broad palette of tastes and knowledge.Tom’s main musical focus is involved with the acute and detailed processes of improvisation. His interests lay in how the combinations of musical elements from separate genres can lay on top of each other and how both academic processes and emotive urges and senses can be combined to produce wonderfully elaborate music without the need for pre-learned scores or musical preconceptions. He studied (2010-2012) for a Master of Music course at the Conservatory in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) funded by the Arts Council of Wales’ Advanced study award program specializing in research on the use of Low Tech electronics within freely improvised music and its application practically and academically.Tom has performed with many artists, names including Tony Allen (Fela Kuti), Brian Jackson (Gil Scott-Heron), Mathew Bourne, Frank Vigroux, Chris Sharkey (Acoustic Lady Land, Trio Vd), Dave Kane, Huw Warren, along with being an active Member of LIMA (Leeds improvised Music Association). Tom has recently become more involved with the Cologne (Germany) free improv scene completing extensive tours across Germany and The Netherlands and is a long standing member of the Dutch Hip-Hop band Re:Freshed Orchestra.

...Κarnatic music in everyday music
5-11 November 2012
Windcraft Music Centre organises seminars with the internationally recognized Cypriot composer Andys Skorids on the subject: Karnatic (South Indian) music and its application on everyday music practicing, composing and improvising.
Karnatic music, and the way it can be applied to education, has so much richness and lends simplicity to the most complicated issues we face today: from performing a simple quintuplet to the most complicated polyrhythmic structures.
This first cycle of masterclasses will offer a short introduction in Karnatic music and its basic principles and concepts. The Ghatis (rhythmic structure) system will be explained, as well as how polyrhythms (Jathis) can be created with them. All these will be presented in accordance with Tala (metre) and will be explained in such a way that they can be applied in everyday music practice.
Appropriate for all kind of musicians, dancers, actors and anyone involved with music.
